The best suitcases and carry-on bags for traveling

Although international travel is definitely harder to pursue than it used to be, I have done my best over the past two years to make my travel dreams come true in the safest way possible.

My family and friends thought I was crazy for planning a trip to Italy in the summer of 2021, a weekend getaway to Aruba a few months later, and even my next trip to Portugal in February of this year. But there are definitely ways to travel during the pandemic — if you do it right.

Booking flights with good cancellation policies, reimbursable accommodation, getting vaccinated, wearing a good mask, and doing your research on your destination’s COVID restrictions (usually a negative COVID test within 72 hours of departure) is a good start.

Whether you traveled during the COVID-19 pandemic or not, you probably won’t go anywhere without a suitcase. Over the past four or five years, I’ve become obsessed with my Travel suitcases. Through the cobblestones of Florence, the icy roads of Reykjavik, Iceland and beyond, they never let me down.

Similar to the Apple AirPods Pros, at one point it seemed like the Away Bags were just about everywhere I looked. A few years after the brand launched in 2015 (and became super popular with millennials), I asked my parents for the Larger hand luggage for Christmas and I haven’t looked back since.

Back from my studies abroad, I had a mortifying experience at Munich International Airport when my cheap, oversized bag opened up on the baggage claim conveyor belt and half of my stuff have been extended to the view of the world. I vividly remember an old man bending over to hand me my underwear. Nevertheless, you could probably understand why I was willing to invest in a good quality suitcase.

These days I turn the Larger hand luggage with The way and Great (yes, I own all three) and one of the best parts is that they all nest inside each other for easy storage. I also own The support: aluminum edition but only use it on special occasions.

What makes Away different?

For starters, you get incredibly durable, high-quality cases at a great price. The brand’s original line of suitcases cost $325 or less. They come in a variety of different colors and sizes and now have dozens of accessories such as packing cubes, tote bags and more that fit perfectly in all Away luggage.

Also, if you go for one of the smaller purses, it comes with an ejectable portable charger. All bags come with a black leather luggage tag (with customization option), international travel plug adapters, durable handle, concealed laundry bag section, 360 degree swivel wheels, key lock TSA-approved suit and more. Plus, the Away Lifetime Guarantee means you’ll never have to search for your luggage again.

The brand’s lifetime warranty covers:

  • Cracks or breaks in the hull
  • Wheels, handles or telescopic handles that break and are no longer usable
  • Zippers that can no longer be opened or closed
  • Tears in the fabric that render the fabric of the front pocket non-functional

While you can pretty much throw your luggage across the room without worrying about damage, expect a few bumps and scratches after a few uses. When choosing the color for my first Bigger Carry-On, I would choose between black and light pink, but after some back and forth I decided to go with the fun option: pink. It definitely has scuffs, just like my medium (black). But minor marks certainly do not detract from the overall quality and appearance of the bags.

Size and space

Just a few months before the pandemic really hit, I went to Iceland for four nights in January 2020. (Although it was the experience of a lifetime and the last international trip I would take in almost a year , I recommend going in the spring). I managed to pack snow boots, sneakers, two chunky cable-knit sweaters, jeans, and all my other cold-weather vacation essentials in my Bigger Carry-On. This baby can fit many!

General thoughts

For context, I’ve used and tried many different suitcases over the years and even with my own sister who works at another luxury luggage brand (at a deep discount, may I add), I’m still looking for my Away luggage before anything else. .

Try an Away Suitcase. After all, they have an amazing return policy (although I doubt you’ll want to give it up). You have 100 calendar days to use an item and return it. At any time during this period, you can get a full refund or exchange it for another item.
