Preds Foundation awards SuperGrant to Nashville Adult Literacy Council

Nashville, Tenne The Literacy Council (NALC) will receive a SuperGrant totaling $ 70,000 on Monday, November 22 at Bridgestone Arena as the Predators take on the Anaheim Ducks. A Nashville-based nonprofit, the Nashville Adult Literacy Council helps teach reading, writing and English to adults. This SuperGrant will help fund the NALC Virtual Tutor program, program licenses, and the opportunity to hire a new staff member to help run the program and have a direct impact on our community’s literacy rate.

“We couldn’t be more excited about this SuperGrant from the Nashville Predators Foundation and SmileDirectClub,” said Kim Karesh, CEO of the Nashville Adult Literacy Council. “Families come to NALC in times of transition, and literacy is a skill that allows them to learn what they need in order to improve their lives. As one student told me, “when you can read, you can learn anything”. During the pandemic, we had to shut down some of our tutoring programs, and this grant is helping us bring tutoring back into a virtual format. Although we had great success this year with our online courses, we really missed the connections that are being made between our volunteers and our learners. Nothing can replace the friendships that are formed, and we can’t wait to get back to them.

Founded in 1982, NALC is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that helps approximately 500 adult learners and works with hundreds of volunteer tutors each year. NALC’s vision for all members of the Nashville community is to achieve confident, healthy and independent adult lives through literacy, with a mission for all adults in the city to learn reading, writing skills and English they need for a better life. .

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, NALC has offered literacy classes virtually. Despite a successful transition to this method, the organization also has many learners who would benefit from the more personalized approach that one-on-one tutoring allows. Through SuperGrant funds, NALC will continue to strengthen its virtual tutoring program to create more individual learning opportunities; master their program online by purchasing additional licenses; obtain more impactful materials for tutors and learning; and create a new post to further improve the program.

“Through our research, we learned that one in eight Nashville adults cannot read, which is a staggering statistic,” said Predators vice president of community relations Rebecca King. “With the opportunity to support NALC, we can help not only change this statistic, but also change the trajectory of every life they impact, as well as their future generations. The ripple effect of this grant will benefit our community for many years to come. After meeting several adult learners, we have seen the confidence and pride this program has brought them, as well as the love and compassion they have for their tutors who care so much for them. learned. We are very proud to be associated with this incredible organization. “

“SmileDirectClub is proud to partner with the Nashville Predators Foundation to launch the third season of the SuperGrant program by supporting the important work of the Nashville Adult Literacy Countil,” said John Sheldon, Marketing Director of SmileDirectClub. “While your smile can convey so much, we know that learning to read and write is a very important transition and an incredible confidence factor for an adult. We are delighted that learning is facilitated through the Virtual One-on-One Tutoring Program which the grant is funded.

The NALC has won eight national awards and two regional awards for outstanding program, staff dedication and student achievement. Since its founding, the organization has also offered citizenship courses, specialist workplace literacy courses, GED courses, English courses for adult immigrants and more.
