Man cited after TSA agents found 23 guns packed in hand luggage

Knives, disposable scalpels and brass knuckles were removed from luggage.

A man has been cited by police after Transportation Security Administration officers found a stash of 23 guns in his carry-on luggage at a checkpoint at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Locking blade knives, a dagger, disposable scalpels, martial arts throwing knives and a pair of brass knuckles were discovered as the bag was placed in the checkpoint’s x-ray machine on Wednesday.

TSA agents pulled the bag over to search it and the weapons were then removed. The authorities were alerted and the man was then issued with a citation.

“When passengers have prohibited items in their carry-on baggage, it slows down the screening process,” airport TSA Federal Security Director John Busch said in a press release. “Travelers play a role in effective screening at checkpoints by knowing what should and should not be packed in carry-on baggage.”

If the weapons had been packed in checked baggage, the administration said it would not have needed to issue a citation.

“Even in the sometimes chaotic checkpoint environment, TSA agents at our airport do an incredible job every day keeping dangerous items out of the aircraft cabin,” Busch added. “It is important to recognize them and recognize the importance of their mission.”
