Prosecutors have charged a 21-year-old man with complicity in murder in the murder of John L. Greer, a 23-year-old man gunned down in the Linwood-Homeowners-Ivanhoe neighborhood of Kansas City last month.

Nathaniel Carter, of Kansas City, was charged on Wednesday with accessory to second-degree murder, accessory to criminal action with a weapon, criminal action with a weapon and unlawful use of weapons, the county attorney’s office announced Thursday. of Jackson.

Carter is the second person charged in the Aug. 19 murder of Greer. Last week, prosecutors charged 22-year-old Davon D. Canady with second-degree murder and three other crimes related to the fatal shooting.

On Thursday, each man was being held in the Jackson County Jail on $250,000 bond.

Greer had been shot and killed when Kansas City police were called to a residence in the 3500 block of Wayne Avenue. He was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told police they heard gunshots coming from a vacant lot up the block. Afterwards, several people were seen getting into a black Chevy Monte Carlo and taking off on Wayne Avenue.

Surveillance footage from the area captured photographs of the Monte Carlo, including its license plate number. But detectives were told by the Missouri Department of Revenue that the label was either altered or false, according to court documents.

Witnesses later told police that Greer was visiting the 3500 block of Wayne Avenue when Canady challenged him to a fight outside. Canady was in the neighborhood with Carter and another person at the time, authorities said.

Canady allegedly tried to hit Greer with a handgun, witnesses said, then handed the gun to Carter. Authorities say Carter shot Greer in the back as Canady lost the fight.

Canady then took the gun from Carter and shot Greer a second time as the injured man rushed into a residence, authorities said.

Canady was arrested by Kansas City police late Thursday morning in the 7200 block of Baltimore Avenue during a surveillance operation. He had been wanted for questioning in the Greer murder for a month, according to court documents.

Court documents Thursday did not mention a defense attorney for Canady or Carter.
