Four suspects arrested after stealing over $90,000 from designer Balenciaga handbags from Hamptons store: police

SUFFOLK COUNTY, Long Island (WABC) – Four people have been arrested for stealing designer handbags worth thousands of dollars from a Long Island store, police say.

The thieves got away with more than $90,000 worth of Balenciaga bags from the designer’s East Hampton location.

On March 3, surveillance video shows a woman entering the store in a pink ski mask and sunglasses appearing to shop at the store while on the phone.

She asked an employee to check if he had a pair of shoes in her size and when the employee went to the back of the store, four other masked people entered and began grabbing bags, records show. judicial.

The woman in the ski mask fled with the others and fled in a Dodge Durango.

An employee at a store near Balenciaga noticed the suspicious activity and called the police.

Officers from the East Hampton Village Police Department chased the Dodge to the edge of their jurisdiction where New York State Troopers resumed the pursuit at high speed.

But the soldiers had to back off as the Dodge began to travel more than 100 miles while veering into oncoming traffic.

After continuing to follow the car from a safe distance down the Long Island Freeway, the soldiers saw the car exiting the freeway onto Wading River Road.

Three suspects then jumped out of the car and ran towards a wooded area. while the two remaining suspects attempted to retrieve the stolen bags before following.

Officers were able to arrest four of the suspects after searching the area and recovering 36 of the 48 stolen handbags.

“As well as entering Suffolk County with the intent of stealing the property of others, their actions put lives at risk as they fled the scene of the crime and drove recklessly, sometimes nearly 100 miles away. the hour,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said. “I hope this case clearly demonstrates our commitment to prosecuting anyone involved in organized thefts from our retail stores.”

The 48 bags represent a total of $94,000.

The woman who originally entered the store with the pink ski mask is still on the run.

The three men and two women who were arrested have been charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
